3 Tips For Keeping Your Home Cool In Summer And Warm In Winter

When the weather outside is hot, nothing beats escaping the heat by cooling off at home. And when temperatures outside start to drop, coming home to a warm, cozy house is one of the best feelings there is. However, many people struggle with keeping their homes at a comfortable temperature without having to pay an arm and a leg for their utility bills each month.

Luckily, there are a few things you can do at home to help reduce your utility costs while also ensuring that your home is comfortable for you. To show you how this can be done, here are three tips for keeping your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

Be Smart With Your Windows And Blinds

One of the most effective ways to heat or cool your home is to use the power of the sun to your advantage. For most people, this means blocking the sun when you want to stay cool and letting the sunlight in when you need a little extra heat.

To best do this, Jeremy Anderberg, a contributor to ArtOfManliness.com, recommends that you be strategic about when you open or close the blinds to your windows. Additionally, you can open your actual windows to let fresh air in to help get the temperature of your home to your exact liking.

Seal and Insulate Your Home

If the air you’re paying for within your home is escaping out holes or cracks, you’re going to have a much more difficult time regulating your interior temperature without having to crank your air conditioner or heater.

To combat this, Dana McMahan, a contributor to NBC News, recommends that you go around your home and seal up any cracks or holes that you see. This will help to keep unwanted air from leaving or coming into your home. And to keep it from radiating out or in, you should also ensure that your home is properly insulated as well.

Switch Out Your Textiles and Linens

Aside from the strategies mentioned above, you can also help keep yourself at a comfortable temperature inside your home simply by using the right textiles and linens.

According to Katie Avis-Riordan and Olivia Heath, contributors to HouseBeautiful.com, it’s wise to use cotton linens and textiles during the summer because they’re much more breathable and can help to keep things cool. But once fall and winter roll around, consider opting for materials that are heavier and will help you keep you warm and cozy.

If you want to be able to stay at a comfortable temperature when you’re home without having to use your heater or air conditioner too much, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you accomplish this.
