3 Tips For Adding A Garden To Your Landscaping

If you have a large yard that you’re not sure what to do with, one great option can be to add a garden to your space. Not only will this add variety to your landscape design, but it can also help you learn more about the food you eat and help you to be healthier by growing your own produce.

To help you take the first steps in this process, here are three tips for adding a garden to your landscaping.

Put Your Garden In The Right Place

The first thing you need to consider when starting a garden in your yard is where the ideal place is for your garden plot.

According to the editors of Better Homes and Gardens, you’re going to want to pick an area that gets about six to eight hours to full and direct sunlight each day. In addition to this, you’re going to want to pick a very flat area. And depending on what types of plants or vegetables you’re planning to plant in your garden, you’ll also want to be sure that you have decent access to a water source and that there’s enough shade not to fry your plants during the hottest parts of the day or of the summer.

Also, if you live in an area where there’s a lot of wildlife, you may also want to consider putting up a fence around your garden to keep pests away and protect your plants from being eaten.

Learn About Your Soil

Before you choose which plants you want to have in your garden, David Beaullieu, a contributor to The Spruce, advises that you should learn more about your soil and even get it tested if necessary.

When getting your soil tested, you should find out if there are nutritional problems that you need to supplement with other types of soils, what the pH levels of your soil are, and what type of soil you’re working with. With this information in hand, you’ll be able to know what your soil needs in order for your garden to be as successful as possible.

Plan For How To Keep Weeds Out

The last thing you want to happen once you’ve gotten all of your garden ready and planted is for weed to choke out all the hard work you’ve done. To prevent this from happening, you need to have a plan for how to keep the weeds out.

To help you with this, SFGate.com shares that some of the tactics you can try include digging a small trench around your garden and laying down vinyl edging or covering your garden bed with organic mulch.

If you’re wanting to add a garden to your landscaping at home, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you learn how this can be done.
